Clearent (now Xplor Pay)
Clearent built a merchant base of about 45,000 businesses, mostly sold through software and POS partners. On July 1, 2025 it became Xplor Pay. The name changed; the three-year agreements and the $395 termination fee merchants keep complaining about did not.

What to know about Clearent.
- Three-year agreements that renew themselves, with a $395 termination fee per location, or the maximum state law allows.
- Termination fees years later. Merchants describe being charged the fee after the initial three years, and being told by Clearent that what their sales rep promised was not true.
- Unhappy merchants. 39 BBB complaints in three years, not BBB accredited, and a Trustpilot rating of about 2.1 out of 5.
Who you are signing with
Clearent was established in 2005, became a certified processor in 2008, and was part of the merger that formed Xplor Technologies in 2021. It reports about 45,000 merchants and $16 billion in processing volume, much of it sold through software companies and point-of-sale partners. On July 1, 2025 Clearent by Xplor officially rebranded as Xplor Pay, and it now focuses on embedded payments for software platforms.
Fee practices: the agreement is the problem
Clearent does not publish standard rates. Depending on who sold the account, merchants have been placed on flat-rate, tiered or interchange-plus pricing, and interchange-plus markups vary from very competitive to several times higher. The terms around the rate draw the complaints:
| Term | As reported |
|---|---|
| Contract length | Three years, renewing automatically |
| Early termination fee | $395 per location, or the maximum allowed by state law |
| Pricing | Flat-rate, tiered or interchange-plus, set account by account |
| Processor | Agreements reported through TSYS |
| Other fees | PCI compliance, statement and equipment fees depending on the account |

Complaints
Clearent is not BBB accredited, with 39 complaints in the last three years, and its Trustpilot score is about 2.1 out of 5. Most satisfied merchants never leave a review, so that average says a meaningful number were hurt enough to go and say so. The complaints repeat: a termination fee nobody mentioned at signing, charged even years after the initial term; charges continuing after cancellation; agreements merchants say they never received; and, in 2025, recurring charges with no statements and no notice that the company had changed its name. Clearent’s responses commonly point to the signed agreement.
Regulatory and legal
We found no Federal Trade Commission or state attorney general actions and no class actions against Clearent. That earns most of the available points.
Transparency and sales channel
No published pricing, agreements merchants say they never saw, and a name change at least one merchant says arrived without notice. Much of Clearent’s business comes through software and POS partners, and merchants describe sales representatives promising no termination fee, which Clearent later told them was not true.

Common questions
Is Clearent now Xplor Pay?
Yes. Clearent by Xplor officially rebranded to Xplor Pay on July 1, 2025, aligning with its parent company, Xplor Technologies. Existing Clearent merchant accounts continue under the Xplor Pay name.
How do I log in to Clearent?
Clearent merchants have used the Clearent merchant portal and the Compass reporting portal, which still appear under clearent.net addresses, and Xplor Pay now has its own sign-in. Start from the official Xplor Pay website rather than an emailed link, and call the support number on your statement if your login no longer works.
Does Clearent have an early termination fee?
Yes. Reviewers report a standard three-year agreement through TSYS with an early termination fee of $395 per location or the maximum allowed by state law, and merchants report being charged it years after the initial term, because agreements renew automatically.
What are Clearent’s processing fees?
Clearent does not publish standard rates. Merchants have been placed on flat-rate, tiered and interchange-plus pricing depending on who sold the account, and the markup on interchange-plus accounts varies widely. Your statement shows what you actually pay.
Who processes Clearent accounts?
Clearent has been a certified processor since 2008, and its standard agreements have been reported as running through TSYS. It is now the U.S. payments division of Xplor Technologies, operating as Xplor Pay.
Why are there complaints about Clearent’s name change?
At least one 2025 BBB complaint describes recurring charges with no statements provided, no notice of the company’s name change, and an early termination fee charged without clear disclosure. If your statement name changed, check every fee carefully.
