Fractional CFO Rates and Salary What they charge, what they earn, and how to make the fee look small
Published fractional CFO rates range from under $100 an hour to over $400, and the reason is that different sources measure different things. Here is what each one actually says, as of September 2026, and what it means for setting or justifying a fee.

Fractional CFO hourly rates
There are three kinds of source, and they disagree because they measure different things. Firms publish what they charge, which is also marketing. Marketplaces show what individual CFOs list. Job postings show what employers are willing to offer.
| Source | What it measures | Hourly rate |
|---|---|---|
| Fractional CFO firm pricing guides | What firms say they charge | $175 to $450, with most experienced practitioners at $200 to $350 |
| Go Fractional marketplace | Rates CFOs list on their profiles | Average $174, middle half $125 to $220 |
| Fractional Pulse | What employers post for hourly roles | Median $92, from 64 postings |

Go Fractional also found that CFOs ask about $45 an hour more than employers post on average. That gap is where negotiation happens, and it is exactly the gap a documented early win closes.

Hourly, retainer or project: choosing a model
Monthly retainer
Best for ongoing work. It makes income predictable and removes the client’s hesitation about picking up the phone, which is where much of a CFO’s value sits.
Hourly
Best for advisory work or a scope nobody can define yet. Many CFOs start hourly and convert to a retainer once the work is understood.
Fixed project fee
Best for fundraising, acquisitions, system implementations and clean-up work with a clear finish line.
Value based
Priced against the result rather than the hours. It only works when the result can be measured, which is why a documented early saving is so valuable.
How to make your fee look small
Whatever you charge, the client sees it every month. The CFOs who keep clients, raise rates and get referred are the ones whose fee sits next to a bigger number they found.
Merchant processing fees are one of the fastest places to find that number. They are a recurring cost the business already pays, the industry is non-regulated, the card networks change over 200 rules and rates every April and October, and every merchant agreement lets the processor change its fees at any time. weAudit finds savings on 99 percent of the processing audits it performs, and clients save about 40 percent on average.
An illustration
Take a business paying $180,000 a year to accept cards. A 40 percent saving is $72,000 a year, the same as twelve months of a $6,000 retainer. From that point on, the client is not paying for a CFO. The CFO is paying for themselves.
Figures are illustrative. Actual savings depend on the account.
Because you work with several clients, the same move repeats. One audit at each client puts a documented saving next to every retainer you bill, and each one is a reason for that client to keep you and refer you.
weAudit does the audit and the fix. The first audit is free, our fee is flat and never a percentage of savings, and we take no revenue share, referral arrangement or financial tie from any processor or ISO. You bring the result to your client. See how fractional CFOs work with weAudit, or browse the fractional CFO companies we have profiled. Frequently asked questions
How much does a fractional CFO charge per hour?
It depends on who you ask. Fractional CFO firms publish rates of $175 to $450 an hour. On the Go Fractional marketplace the average listed rate was $174 an hour in September 2026, with the middle half between $125 and $220. Employers posting hourly roles offer less, with a median of $92 an hour in Fractional Pulse’s sample.
What is a typical fractional CFO retainer?
Pricing guides published by fractional CFO firms put most small and midsize business retainers at $5,000 to $7,500 a month, with a broader range of about $3,000 to $15,000 depending on hours and company size.
What is the average fractional CFO salary?
ZipRecruiter reported an average of $151,302 a year in 2026, with most falling between $101,500 and $182,500 and the top 10 percent at $257,500 or more. Those figures come from job postings, so independent fractional CFOs running several clients can earn more or less.
Should a fractional CFO charge hourly or a retainer?
Most established fractional CFOs prefer a monthly retainer for ongoing work because it makes income predictable and removes the client’s hesitation about quick questions. Hourly suits advisory or undefined scopes, and fixed fees suit defined projects such as fundraising.
How does a fractional CFO justify their fee?
By delivering a documented, recurring saving or gain the client can see next to the fee. A cost the client was already paying, such as merchant processing fees, is one of the fastest ways to show a result that covers the retainer.
