National Processing (now pmtbox)
An Orem, Utah sales organization that built its name on published, subscription-style interchange-plus pricing. In November 2025 it became pmtbox, and the published price list went with the old name. Its BBB record is strong; its customer reviews are not.
What to know before you sign.
- National Processing is now pmtbox. Same owners and team, new name on your statement since November 2025, and no published standard rates since the change.
- “No cancellation fees” with a termination fee. Reviewers report an early termination fee of up to about $300, and merchants describe three-year terms on equipment deals.
- Unhappy customers. Its Trustpilot rating is about 1.9 out of 5 on 69 reviews, despite an A+ from the BBB.
- Fees that keep running. Merchants describe PCI non-compliance fees of about $100 a month during a pause, charges after cancellation, and funds held for up to 180 days when accounts are closed.
Who you are signing with
National Processing was founded about 17 years ago by Wayne Hamilton and is based in Orem, Utah. On November 1, 2025 it rebranded as pmtbox, operated by Payment Box, Inc., which says the team, ownership and contacts are unchanged; it has since raised outside funding and repositioned toward larger e-commerce businesses. Payment Box operates as a registered ISO/MSP of Commercial Bank of California and Chesapeake Bank. It is not National Processing Company, or NPC, which was a separate processor absorbed into Vantiv, now Worldpay.
Fee practices: a published price, until it wasn’t
Under the National Processing name, the company did something most sales organizations do not: it published its pricing. That pricing was a subscription-style interchange-plus model, with a monthly fee from about $9.95 and a markup of about 0.14% to 0.29% plus 7 to 15 cents a transaction, with a lower markup for paying a higher monthly fee. That structure earns real credit.
Since becoming pmtbox, the company no longer publishes standard rates and directs merchants to sales for custom pricing. And the terms around the price have drawn complaints: an early termination fee reported at up to about $300 despite marketing of no cancellation fees, PCI non-compliance fees, and 180-day holds on closed accounts. Compare any quote with what a fair interchange-plus markup looks like.
Complaints: strong BBB, weak reviews
National Processing has been BBB accredited since 2008 with an A+ grade and relatively few formal complaints, several resolved to the merchant’s satisfaction. Its Trustpilot score tells a different story, about 1.9 out of 5 on 69 reviews. Merchants there describe service fees still being drawn after cancelling, months of trying to get copies of statements, long holds with support, and $100 monthly non-compliance fees charged while a business was paused. Its BBB responses to account closures cite chargebacks and ACH rejects, with funds held for up to 180 days under the contract.
Why we weigh the reviews more heavily. Most satisfied merchants never leave a review; the ones who take the time are usually the ones who were hurt. A 1.9 average across 69 reviews says a meaningful number of merchants had a bad enough experience to go looking for somewhere to say so. A good BBB grade, which largely reflects whether a company answers complaints, does not cancel that out.
Regulatory and legal
We found no Federal Trade Commission or state attorney general actions and no class actions against National Processing or pmtbox. That earns most of the available points.
Transparency and sales channel
Publishing pricing was National Processing’s strongest point, and the rebrand took it away. It sells largely through independent agents and partnerships, and public sales complaints are few. It scores in the middle in both categories.
