PCI Rapid Comply Explained
PCI Rapid Comply is the online PCI compliance tool Fiserv, formerly First Data, provides to its merchants. It walks you through the annual self-assessment questionnaire and quarterly scans, if you need them.
The tool itself is not the charge. What you pay for is the compliance service fee on your account, and the monthly fee that follows if your compliance is never reported.
What Is PCI Rapid Comply?
PCI Rapid Comply is Fiserv’s self-service tool for the PCI Data Security Standard. Merchants use it to complete their annual self-assessment questionnaire and, where required, quarterly network scans, and to report the result to Fiserv.
Fiserv’s own merchant materials say there is no additional charge to use the tool, because it is covered by the compliance service fee on your account. The same materials say you are free to use a third-party PCI vendor instead, but that the compliance service fee is still charged if you do.
If your compliance is never reported, those materials describe a monthly fee for non-receipt of PCI validation, charged until you become compliant or report it. That is usually the line merchants notice first.
Plain-English Definition
It is the PCI paperwork portal that comes with a Fiserv account.
You pay for it whether or not you use it, and you pay more if nobody finishes it.
Your Processor Has a Score. Do You Know It?
The line item you just looked up is one entry on a statement built to be hard to read. What your processor leaves off the brochure is the rest of the story: the holds, the lawsuits, the quiet markups and the record behind the logo. We score every major processor independently, and none of them can pay to change the result.
How PCI Rapid Comply Fees Appear
Common Labels
- COMPLIANCE SERVICE FEE
- PCI ANNUAL FEE
- NON-RECEIPT OF PCI VALIDATION
- PCI NON-COMPLIANCE FEE
Where It Sits
- Annual fees usually post once a year
- Non-validation fees post monthly
- Charged per merchant ID or location
- Sometimes only in the fee summary
What to Note
- Whether you already pay another PCI vendor
- Whether your result was reported to Fiserv
- Which month the annual fee posts
- How many merchant IDs are charged
What This Fee Covers
Required by the Networks
The card networks require merchants to comply with PCI DSS, and validating it each year is part of accepting cards.
Priced by the Seller
The compliance service fee and the non-validation fee are set in your agreement, often by the reseller who sold you the account, not by Visa or Mastercard.
Why It Matters
A merchant with a separate PCI vendor can pay that vendor, the compliance service fee, and a non-validation fee on top if the result never reaches Fiserv.
Compliant Is Not the Same as Reported
Plenty of merchants who are fully compliant still pay a non-validation fee because the result never reached their processor. The fee stops when the validation is on record, not when the work is done.
What Is Worth Auditing Here?
Signs It Is Being Charged Correctly
- One compliance service fee per year per merchant ID
- No non-validation fee after you reported
- Your PCI status shows as validated
- One PCI vendor, not two
Signs Worth a Closer Look
- A non-validation fee while you hold a current certificate
- PCI fees on closed or duplicate merchant IDs
- A compliance service fee plus a separate PCI program you were sold
- Non-validation fees that continue after you finished
Where the Real Answer Comes From
Only comparing your PCI fees with your actual validation dates shows whether any were charged in error. Fees charged after you were compliant are often recoverable.
Questions to Ask About This Fee
Ask Your Processor
- Is my PCI compliance recorded as validated on every merchant ID?
- What is my compliance service fee, and when is it charged?
- Why am I paying a non-validation fee if I use another PCI vendor?
- Will you refund non-validation fees charged after I became compliant?
Why These Matter
The first question is the one that stops the monthly fee. The last one is the one that recovers what you already paid.
PCI Rapid Comply FAQ
What is PCI Rapid Comply?
It is Fiserv’s online tool, formerly First Data’s, for completing the annual PCI self-assessment questionnaire and quarterly scans, and reporting the result to Fiserv.
Is there a fee to use PCI Rapid Comply?
Fiserv’s own materials say there is no additional charge to use the tool, because it is covered by the compliance service fee on your account.
Do I have to use PCI Rapid Comply?
No. Fiserv’s materials say you may use a third-party PCI vendor, but your compliance must still be reported to Fiserv, and the compliance service fee is still charged.
Why am I charged for non-receipt of PCI validation?
Because Fiserv has no record that your business validated PCI compliance. The fee continues monthly until you complete validation or report it.
Can I get PCI non-validation fees refunded?
Sometimes. Fees charged after you were already compliant, or on accounts that should not have been charged, are worth disputing with your processor.
Is PCI Rapid Comply the same as TransArmor?
No. PCI Rapid Comply is the compliance reporting tool. TransArmor is Fiserv’s encryption and tokenization service, sold separately.
