TransArmor Explained
TransArmor is Fiserv’s card data security service. It encrypts card data from the moment of the swipe or tap and replaces the card number with a token, so your systems never store the real number.
It is a real product with real value. It is also an add-on, and what you pay for it depends on who sold you your account.
What Is TransArmor?
TransArmor is Fiserv’s data protection service, formerly First Data’s. It combines encryption, which protects the card number while it travels to the processor, with tokenization, which replaces the stored card number with a random value. Fiserv says this reduces the scope and cost of PCI compliance.
It is sold as an add-on to processing. A Fiserv participation addendum lists several TransArmor fee lines, including a tokenization and encryption fee and a minimum monthly fee, with the amounts left for the seller to fill in. One widely read industry guide puts the add-on at roughly $15 to $20 a month.
It is also sold in a bundle. Clover Security Plus packages TransArmor with software monitoring and a data breach liability waiver, priced as its own plan.
Plain-English Definition
It is a security layer that keeps real card numbers off your systems.
Worth having if it is working. Worth questioning if nobody can tell you whether it is switched on.
Your Processor Has a Score. Do You Know It?
The line item you just looked up is one entry on a statement built to be hard to read. What your processor leaves off the brochure is the rest of the story: the holds, the lawsuits, the quiet markups and the record behind the logo. We score every major processor independently, and none of them can pay to change the result.
How the TransArmor Fee Appears
Common Labels
- TRANSARMOR FEE
- TRANSARMOR TOKEN & ENCRYPTION
- TRANSARMOR MINIMUM MONTHLY FEE
- CLOVER SECURITY PLUS
Where It Sits
- In the monthly or service fee section
- Once per merchant ID or location
- Sometimes next to a PCI compliance fee
- Occasionally as a per-transaction token fee
What to Note
- The monthly amount
- Whether your equipment actually encrypts
- Whether you also pay for Clover Security
- Whether you agreed to it in writing
What This Fee Covers
A Fiserv Product
TransArmor is Fiserv’s service, not a card network requirement. No network charges you for it.
Priced by the Seller
The price is set in your agreement, which is why the same service can be included on one account and billed monthly on another.
Why It Matters
It can narrow what your PCI assessment has to cover, and it protects stored card data. That is real value, if it is active on your devices.
Paying for Protection You Do Not Have
Encryption only works if your terminal or gateway supports it and it is switched on. Merchants on older equipment can be billed for TransArmor that never touches a transaction.
What Is Worth Auditing Here?
Signs It Is Being Charged Correctly
- Your devices are confirmed as TransArmor-enabled
- You signed for the service and the price
- The fee matches your agreement
- You are not paying for the same protection under another name
Signs Worth a Closer Look
- TransArmor fees on equipment that cannot encrypt
- TransArmor and Clover Security Plus fees for one location
- A fee that appeared without notice
- TransArmor fees on closed locations or merchant IDs
Where the Real Answer Comes From
Only checking the fee against your equipment and your signed agreement shows whether you are paying for protection you actually have.
Questions to Ask About This Fee
Ask Your Processor
- Is TransArmor active on every one of my devices?
- Where did I agree to this fee, and at what price?
- Does another fee on my statement already cover the same protection?
- Can it be included at no charge, as some resellers do?
Why These Matter
Security add-ons are easy to sell and hard to question. Written answers turn a vague monthly charge into something you can check.
TransArmor FAQ
What is TransArmor on my merchant statement?
It is a fee for Fiserv’s TransArmor service, which encrypts card data at the point of sale and replaces stored card numbers with tokens. It is an optional add-on to your processing.
How much does TransArmor cost?
It depends on who sold you your account. Fiserv’s addendum leaves the amounts for the seller to set, an industry guide puts it at roughly $15 to $20 a month, and some resellers include it at no charge.
Is TransArmor required?
No card network requires TransArmor. PCI compliance is required; TransArmor can make it easier, but it is not the only way to get there.
Is TransArmor worth it?
It can be, for a business that stores card data or wants to narrow its PCI scope, as long as it is actually active on your devices. Check that before paying for it every month.
Can I cancel TransArmor?
It is an add-on, so it can usually be removed. Check your agreement for any notice period and confirm the change with your processor in writing.
What is the difference between TransArmor and Clover Security Plus?
Clover Security Plus is a bundle that includes TransArmor, software monitoring and a breach liability waiver. One location should not be paying separately for both.
